Enjoying Black Powder Episode 1: The Trapdoor Springfield

Black powder military rifles of the 1860s-1880s are a really enjoyable group of guns. A lot of them are relatively reasonably priced, and they are actually pretty easy to reload for. The unavailability of factory ammunition (for most, although not so much for the Trapdoor) makes them seem like a daunting prospect, but for a pretty simple investment in tools and time one can make up ammunition and have a lot of fun with rifles like this.
That's the idea behind a new series here on black powder military rifles. Each month, my friend - and handloader - Tom and I will tak...

In the 1930’s my father bought one at a hardware store as a young man of twelve years old. There were barrels full of them as the government was selling off their vast stockpiles of obsolete weapons and ammunition. Hornady offers very good data specs and explanations of pressure limitations in various guns chambered for the round that just won’t go away.

Loved this weapon. Never found it too heavy either, especially when just marching with it, carrying it across my shoulders. All my stoppages were my own fault. Also, just downright fun to use and take apart. My only complaint is that somehow the ammo belts would always seem to get too short too quickly.

So i bought a norinco SKS off some guy and after doing hours of research and talking with its originalowner, i found out it was the 55,000-ish thousandth produced in china then went to the NVA. Afterwards it was the 4000-ish imported to Washington state where it spent 30 years before making it to my state where the guy who originally bought it from the importer sold it to me. Its really cool and im lucky to have such an early model out of the 12 million norinco produced. Shoots super reliably. I thought i over paid when i bought it for $300 including ffl fee but when i saw it in person and saw its character, i didnt care tbh. I live this gun and it holds a special place in my heart even though i have newer and "better" guns. I wish i could hear its stories. Too bad i lost it and all my other guns in a boating accident.

I remember him casting his own projectiles. They were pointy and had a hollow base that would expand and work as a gas seal. I think he called them "mini balls". He said the brass alone was a couple bucks each.

Little known fact, in the early '70s the US Marshals Service incorporated training with the "Mac-10" in .45acp during in-service advanced personnel training. It earned the nickname "the lunchbox" partially because of its stamped steel receiver and the fact it was so easy to empty so damned fast. Neoprene heat shielding was the preferred grip material around the base of the suppressor assembly. No surprise--full auto muzzle rise could be a real issue.

I have an 1870 Trapdoor in .50-70. It had been sporterized so long ago, don’t know when, but was my grandfather’s and sat in a pickle crock next to the fireplace for as long as I could remember. When my dad passed it came to me. It had a missing hammer, a broken sear and spring, and as I said, the forearm was gone. I found a forearm for sale from the same model and grafted it onto the stock under the rear barrel band, replaced the broken parts, and found a reproduction “ramrod”. The firing pin was frozen in the trapdoor, so that took some work to break loose. I think it is a functioning rifle now. I found a guy in Austin that had some hand loads for it, but I’m a little chicken to fire it.

My mum says to put the milk in last, so you can better judge how much you're putting in. It also goes in after the teabag comes out, so you can properly judge displacement. Teabag goes into a nearby cup for them and not moved, dripping onto the rug, across the kitchen to the pending compost area. Teabag, sugar, water, stir, bag out, milk out of the fridge, into cup, bottle back into the fridge so it can't warm up, don't fill the cup up so far it spills. Or so I am told. I don't drink the stuff, or coffee either. Hot chocolate is nice when someone puts cream and sprinkles on top, or when I can make it myself and add rum to it.
